September 26, 2023, is the one-year anniversary of Project Books, Life with Lex's community service initiative. Project Books donates books to public libraries and public school libraries, specifically Title I schools (schools with federal funding). Over the past year, Project Books has expanded to 30+ student representatives across the country.

I've always viewed libraries as a place of opportunity—they support students' academic and personal success but remain significantly underfunded. As mentioned in Project Book's launch, "American public libraries and public school libraries are dying. According to The Progressive, about 90% of the local and state governments funding for public libraries has been cut after the pandemic, and 'cutting school libraries also means increasing racial and class achievement gaps.' No child should be at a disadvantage because of a broken and neglected system."

Project Books recently partnered with the South Florida-based Fuller Center to help combat this. For the past 50 years, the Fuller Center has helped children from under-resourced families achieve their full potential. They have a variety of programs and services and offer over 1,800 meals and snacks daily. The Fuller Center's new Intergenerational Program provides affordable childcare and allows seniors and children to interact together.

I attended the Intergenerational Program's ribbon-cutting ceremony, and it was inspiring to see all the good this program will provide, both for the children and for the seniors. Project Books is honored to provide the books for the Intergenerational Program's library and a free book fair for the Fuller Center. Together, there is a possibility for change—one where every child has access to a proper education and resources.
